USWU President’s Message

Dear Member,

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the birth of this union. USWU can trace its roots back to Amalgamated Local 355, which was established in 1953. The union has grown and evolved over time from a single local into the USWU of today, a national union comprised of about 30,000 members within 19 Locals. I am proud to be a part of this organization, am proud of its membership and would like to congratulate the officers and members of Local 355 as we celebrate this important milestone. We have done a lot of good over the years and we have a bright future to look forward to together.

I am happy to inform you that the USWU Executive Board has deferred the dues in-

creases that all our members were scheduled to receive at the beginning of 2013. We have continued to run your union as efficiently as possible in order to keep our costs low. Additionally, despite the ongoing tough economy, USWU has continued to successfully organize new members. Together, this makes for a healthy, robust organization. The union has worked hard to provide you the best possible representation while keeping our dues among the lowest in our industries. Thus, we are able to postpone implementing a dues increase at this time. We realize that every little bit matters, and will continue to employ cost-saving measures.

We are introducing a new “Member Spotlight” feature in this edition of our newsletter. This article will continue to appear in future newsletters and will focus on a member or group of members that have done something extraordinary on the job or in their community that is worthy of recognition. Our first group of honorees are setting a high standard. Featured on the cover, we are spotlighting USWU members of Locals 655 and 755 that work at the Bergen County Health Care Center in Rockleigh, NJ. This facility was recently recognized by U.S. News as one of the nation’s best nursing homes. Congratulations to the men and women of USWU whose dedication led to this recognition! Please nominate your coworkers who are deserving of this recognition by writing to us at:

As you know, IUJAT has always been a supporter of our troops. We donate protective gear to any member or relative of a member in active duty. We have always encouraged our union employers to hire returning veterans. Now, with so many military personnel returning home after serving this nation, USWU would like to help. If you have a family member who is a returning veteran looking for work, please let us know. If we can help him or her, we will. All Americans owe our veterans a debt of gratitude, and it is my hope that USWU can repay that debt by helping to get our veterans back to work in a USWU shop.

USWU is also exploring several new initiatives and benefits that will be of interest to our membership. Now that the warmer months are upon us, USWU is planning events that our membership can participate in together. We will hold our first ever USWU Motorcycle Rally on September 8, 2013 in conjunction with CT United Ride (you can find information about registering on the back page of this newsletter.) This is Connecticut’s largest 9-11 tribute. The proceeds from this event will go to the family emergency relief funds for CT Police Officers, CT Fire Fighters and two local United Ways. This is a great opportunity to support a noble cause while bringing the members of USWU together for a day of fun. We hope to see a lot of you come out for an enjoyable day of solidarity and fundraising, so mark your calendars for this important event. Further details on this will be sent to you after you register with us at:

In Solidarity,

Lori Ames
